NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin), also known as lipocalin-2 (LCN2), has anti-bacterial properties by virtue of its ability to sequester iron that is required for bacterial growth. It is a positive acute phase protein; serum levels increase during infection. It is expressed in E. coli with an N-terminal 6-His tag.
